Tennessee’s first major Choice Lanes P3 has cleared federal permitting under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), with the publication of a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). The completion of the I-24 Choice Lanes Project’s environmental permitting is well timed, as proposals for the P3 procurement to deliver the project are reportedly due very soon.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation’s (TDoT) original schedule for the I-24 Choice Lanes project included commercial close for the P3 in the third quarter of this year. The I-24 Choice Lanes project will develop two express lanes in each direction along a 26-mile corridor of I-24 near Nashville – arguably the most congested stretch of highway in Tennessee.
The I-24 project is also the very first procurement in TDoT’s massive “Choice Lanes” procurement pipeline. Three other express lane P3 procurements are being planned to follow, including a project on I-24 near Chattanooga, I-40 near Knoxville, and another project in the Nashville area on I-65.
